Card protection isn't complicated, but buying the wrong supplies is an easy way to waste money or, worse, damage a card. This guide covers each layer of protection, what it's for, and what to look for when you buy. We don't list prices because they change constantly; compare current listings before you buy.

Layer 1: Penny sleeves

A soft, clear plastic sleeve is the first thing every card should go into. It protects the surface from scratches and fingerprints and makes the card slide safely into harder holders.

Layer 2: Toploaders

A rigid plastic holder for a sleeved card. This is the standard way to store and ship valuable raw cards.

Layer 3: Semi-rigid holders (for grading)

If you plan to submit to a grading company, use a semi-rigid holder such as a Card Saver I, not a toploader. PSA's shipping guide asks for cards in a penny sleeve inside a semi-rigid holder and says not to use toploaders or screw-down holders for standard cards, because graders have to remove cards without risking damage.

Layer 4: Magnetic one-touch holders

Magnetic holders close with a magnet and protect a card for display. They're the go-to for showing off PC cards raw. They come in point sizes like toploaders, so match the holder to the card's thickness. Some use UV-resistant plastic; check the product listing if you'll display in a sunny room.

Binders

Binders work well for sets and lower-value cards. Choose side-loading, acid-free, PVC-free pages; side-loading pockets help keep cards from falling out. Avoid ring binders that pinch cards near the rings, and don't overstuff pockets.
