Part of my Bowman 1st section.
Search a prospect's name on eBay and you'll get a wall of cards that all say "Bowman" and "1st." Some are paper cards worth a couple of bucks, some are Chrome autos worth a lot more, and the titles don't always make the difference clear. Here's how I sort them out.
Quick version: Bowman, Bowman Chrome and Bowman Draft are three separate products. "Chrome" describes the card stock, not the product, and a Chrome card can come from any of the three. For most prospects, the card collectors chase is the 1st Bowman Chrome autograph, whichever product it comes from.
The three main products
| Product | What's in it |
|---|---|
| Bowman (the flagship) | Paper base cards plus a separate Chrome prospect section and Chrome Prospect Autographs. ProspectPulse notes the 2025 release had 100 veteran/rookie base cards and 150 prospects. |
| Bowman Chrome | An all-Chrome release with its own base, prospect and autograph checklists. 2025 Bowman Chrome came out in September 2025. |
| Bowman Draft | Focused on the most recent draft class. 2025 Bowman Draft has a 200-card base set on both paper and Chrome stock, plus Chrome Prospect Autographs. It came out January 14, 2026. |
That last date matters. Bowman Draft is named for the draft year, but it can hit shelves in the next calendar year. Cardlines notes 2024 Bowman Draft released December 4, 2024, while 2025 Bowman Draft slid to January 14, 2026. A card sold in 2026 can still be a 2025 card.
Where a player's 1st Bowman shows up
It depends on the player, which is why I always check the checklist instead of guessing:
- Draft picks usually debut in Bowman Draft late in their draft year, or early the next year. For example, Cardlines lists 2025 picks like JoJo Parker (Blue Jays, 8th overall) in 2025 Bowman Draft, and Beckett's checklist has Brady Ebel (CPA-BE) and Josiah Hartshorn (CPA-JHA) in its Chrome Prospect Autographs.
- International signees often debut in flagship Bowman or Bowman Chrome. Rainiel Rodriguez's 1st Bowman Chrome auto is in 2025 Bowman Chrome as CPA-RR, according to Cardlines' list of every 1st Bowman in that product.
- Some top picks get held back. Cardlines noted that 2025's 4th overall pick, Ethan Holliday, appeared to be held back to headline 2026 products. Topps has said Bowman Chrome is a home for players who missed the flagship cut, and that some are held back on purpose.
Paper vs. Chrome
This is the big one for value. Card Collector Capital is clear that a player's paper 1st Bowman, Chrome 1st Bowman, Chrome Prospect Autograph and each refractor are separate cards. Chrome cards use a shiny, thicker stock (Topps calls it chromium) and they're what most prospectors focus on. Paper versions are cheaper and printed in bigger numbers.
How I tell them apart in photos:
- Surface: Chrome is glossy and reflective. Paper looks flat, like a regular Topps base card.
- Card number prefix: In recent Bowman sets, the paper prospect and Chrome prospect lists are separate sections with different prefixes (such as BP- for paper prospects and BCP- for Chrome prospects in flagship Bowman). Check the exact prefix against that year's checklist, because ProspectPulse warns prefixes change by product.
- Back of the card: ask for it. It shows the number and makes it easy to verify.
ProspectPulse puts it well: "A cheap paper sale is not evidence that a Chrome asking price is too high." Always compare the same card to the same card.
Autos: what "CPA" means
Chrome Prospect Autographs (CPA) are the main autograph checklist in all three products. In 2025 Bowman Draft, Beckett lists 102 CPA cards and three autographs per hobby box. Each CPA has a run of serial-numbered refractors, so a "Gold Refractor /50" and a base auto of the same player are very different cards.
Which one I'd buy
- Best overall for a player I believe in: the base 1st Bowman Chrome auto (CPA). It's the card the market prices first, so it's easiest to sell later.
- On a budget: the base Chrome 1st Bowman (no auto) or a low-numbered refractor of it. Same player, a fraction of the risk.
- Cheapest way in: the paper 1st Bowman. Good for a PC (personal collection) card, but don't expect it to move like the Chrome.
- Rip or buy singles? Unless you love opening packs, buying the exact single is cheaper than chasing one player in hobby boxes. My hobby vs. retail guide covers what you get in each box type.
