Hot Wheels is one of the few gifts that works for a four-year-old and a forty-year-old. The trick is knowing which one you're buying for. Kids want volume and track. Collectors want premiums, protection and the stuff that's hard to find. I've split it that way below. I don't list exact prices, because they change a lot this time of year.
For kids
1. A Hot Wheels 20-pack
For little kids, more cars is better. A 20-pack of mainlines is the classic gift, and I'd bet they play with every one.
Shop: 20-packs
2. A track set
Kids want to race them. Any of the bigger track sets with a loop or a launcher will get used.

3. A carry case
Holds a few dozen cars and keeps them off the floor. Good for kids and for adults who take cars to meetups.

For adult collectors
4. Car Culture or Boulevard premiums
For the adult collector. Premium lines have metal bases and rubber tires, and they're what I'd buy myself.
Shop: Car Culture · Boulevard
5. A Team Transport set
A premium car plus a matching hauler. These look great on a shelf and make a nice gift for car people.
Shop: Team Transport
6. Protector packs
Clear plastic cases that keep carded cars from getting bent corners. Collectors go through a lot of them.
Shop: Protector packs
7. A wall display case
For someone whose cars are sitting in bins. A wall case turns a collection into decor.
Shop: Wall display cases
8. A Super Treasure Hunt
The grail gift for a Hot Wheels collector. They're rare in stores, so the secondhand market is where most people find them. Check sold prices, and watch for fakes and customs.
Shop: Shop Super Treasure Hunts on eBay
9. A Red Line Club membership
For the serious collector. RLC is Mattel's collector club with exclusive cars. Memberships and drops sell out fast, so check Mattel Creations for timing.
