Few streetwear pieces are as simple, or as collectible, as the Stüssy Chapter tee: Shawn Stussy's signature-style script plus the name of a city where the brand runs its own store. This guide covers what they are, the history behind them, how to check authenticity, sizing, and where to buy and sell. We don't list prices because they move constantly; check sold listings before you buy.
What is a Chapter store?
Stüssy calls its own branded shops "Chapters," and keeps a Chapter directory on its website. Locations listed there include Los Angeles (La Brea Ave), New York (Prince St), Toronto, Vancouver, London (Wardour St), Amsterdam, Biarritz and Seoul. Stüssy has also announced Chapters in Asia, such as Shibuya in Tokyo (opened July 2021), which the brand said complements its Shanghai, Nagoya and Kyoto Chapters. Grailed describes the network as nearly 30 stores across four continents. Store lineups change, so check the directory before planning a trip.
What is a Chapter tee?
Each Chapter sells city-specific tees. Per Grailed, the classic template is Shawn Stussy's handwriting-style logo paired with site-specific text, and the same treatment appears on tees made for Dover Street Market locations that carry the brand. Colors vary by run; Grailed notes the Honolulu tee has come in black, orange, white and grey, among others.
Store openings often bring extra exclusives:
- Singapore (2013): two exclusive tees, a "World Tribe" design with world cities on the front and Singapore landmarks on the back, and a lion-themed "Singapore Tribe" design, each in three colors.
- Honolulu (2018): an in-store-only capsule of graphic tees, hats, fleece and more, with tropical motifs nodding to the brand's surf roots.
- Shibuya (2021): opened with an exclusive Shibuya Chapter tee.
A quick history
Shawn Stussy launched his own surfboard business in Laguna Beach around 1980 and signed each board with a marker. That scrawl became the logo. He printed it on tees to promote the boards at trade shows, and buyers wanted the shirts more than the boards. In 1984 he and partner Frank Sinatra Jr. (no relation to the singer) formed Stüssy Inc. In the late '80s and early '90s, the brand built the International Stüssy Tribe, a worldwide circle of creatives including Hiroshi Fujiwara, James Jebbia and Goldie, and opened its own stores in cities like Tokyo, London and New York. Farfetch notes that Jebbia helped set up the New York store before he founded Supreme. Chapter tees carry on that idea of a global, city-by-city tribe.
What makes some sought after
- Access: Chapter tees are sold through the stores rather than as a normal online drop, so you have to visit the city or find one secondhand.
- Opening and city exclusives: launch tees like Singapore's and Shibuya's were made for one occasion.
- Hard-to-reach cities: tees from less-visited Chapters turn up less often on resale sites.
- Age: older pieces with earlier tags draw vintage collectors.
- Condition and color: clean prints and less common colorways matter, as with any tee.
How to spot fakes
Chapter tees are simple to print, which makes them easy to fake. Check these points:
- Neck tag "ü": on real tags the umlaut dots are thin, small and evenly spaced. Thick, oversized or merged dots are a red flag.
- Neck tag "t": the bottom-right of the "t" in Stüssy has a smooth curve. Fakes often end it in a flat line.
- "Size" text: legit tags have wider, evenly spaced lettering. Cramped text is a warning sign.
- Wash tag: "100% COTTON" should be small and in a font that matches the rest of the tag. Large or mismatched type suggests a fake.
- Script logo: it copies a real signature. Look for a confident stroke, a slightly heavier left side and a "y" that tapers to a point instead of ending blunt.
- Print quality: a real print is crisp and even, with no halo around the letters. Thick, crusty, fuzzy or cracking prints point to a fake.
- Construction: modern tees have even double-needle hems and a neat neckline.
- Vintage clues: Stüssy tees from before the mid-'90s used single-stitch seams, and wash tags moved from the neck to the side seam in the late '90s. Make sure the tag style fits the era a seller claims.
Tags change across seasons and factories, so compare against a confirmed-authentic tee from the same era. When in doubt, ask for tag and print close-ups or use a paid authentication service.
Sizing
Stüssy's official size guide runs XS–XXL and notes that fit varies by style, so check each listing's flat measurements. Farfetch describes Stüssy tees as roomy, wide and true to size, but says they can shrink after a wash or two, which is why some buyers size up. Collectors on Reddit report that recent Chapter tees use a lighter, stretchier fabric and can run bigger than older ones. If you're buying secondhand, ask the seller for pit-to-pit and length measurements and compare them to a tee you own.
Where to buy and sell
- In store: the most reliable source is a Chapter itself. Stock can sell out.
- eBay: the widest selection. Filter by sold listings to see what tees actually sold for. Stüssy Chapter tees on eBay · Tokyo Chapter tees on eBay
- Grailed: a menswear and streetwear marketplace with a dedicated community. Stüssy Chapter tees on Grailed
Selling tips: photograph the front and back print, neck tag, wash tag and hem, and list the city, color and size in the title. Include flat measurements, since Stüssy sizing varies. See our streetwear guides for more.
